Designing a pet-friendly interior goes beyond making space for your pets. It entails creating a space that is practical for both the pet and the owner without compromising on style. As mentioned in our previous blog, it’s important to focus on the following design considerations: understanding the needs of your pet, selecting pet-friendly materials, creating pet-friendly zones, integrating style with functionality, and maintaining a clean and fresh home.

To incorporate these design focuses, we challenged our Design Assistant, Laney McCullough to put together a pet-friendly design.

Here Laney is to share the design!

This space was designed as a functional mudroom that accommodates both the homeowner and their dog, with different zones to help organize the space.

CONCEPT

Dogs often experience anxiety, whether it’s due to being left alone or when it comes to taking a bath. The design incorporates floral patterns, soft hues in taupes and neutrals, complemented by a pop of lavender. Lavender is known for its calming effects, aiding in stress and anxiety relief. The design of this space aims to create a calming environment where the dog can relax and unwind.

SPACE PLANNING

One side of the room is designated for cleaning activities, equipped with a washer & dryer, sink area, and a dog bath complete with retractable stairs for the dog’s convenience. On the other side, there is plenty of storage for cleaning materials, pet necessities, and other items. This side of the space also includes a dedicated dog zone featuring a food station and a cozy dog bed area. The room has a central walkway that offers an easy path of travel.

Starting from the right, the space features a washer and dryer with storage above. Then as you move towards the middle, there is a sink with drawers for extra storage and a trash pullout. Behind the wall is the dog bath area.

The dog bath features a hand-held shower fixture and fun accent tile! Underneath the bath is space for storage and a pull-out staircase for the dog for easy access.

Moving on to the other side of the room, you can see the dog food zone designed with a dedicated space for dog bowls for food and water, a pot filler for water refills. Additionally, this area is equipped with storage for dry and cold food. Next to the counter area, there is ample room for storage for cleaning supplies, other pet essentials, coats, shoes, etc. This storage area also includes a cozy bed for the dog to relax on.
